A one-time hiring bonus of $2,000 is offered exclusively for this position.
Under the direction of the Disabilities and Mental Health Manager, the school-based Speech Therapist is responsible for the prevention, identification, evaluation, and treatment of children/students’ birth through 5 years of age exhibiting communication disorders. Responsibilities also include accurately documenting records of initial evaluations, treatment progress and any treatment plan notes and working with monolingual Spanish-speaking parents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
Prevention and Consultation
- Consult with parents, teachers, and community agencies concerning normative speech and language development and behavioral manifestations of a student “at risk” for a communication disorder or delay
- Observe and informally interact with referred students in the classroom setting as needed
- Informally assess learning environments in relation to communication and assist staff with developing optimal learning environments for the facilitation of communication skills within the classroom setting
- Consult with parents regarding the development of speech/language communication programs/activities, including recommendations for home support of school goals
- Consult with parents regarding methods to facilitate optimum communication behaviors
- Recommend environmental modifications or strategies for children who are exhibiting communicative disorders and those who have not passed the ASQ assessment
- Educate and collaborate with site personnel regarding classroom strategies that will enhance communication for all Students
- Consult with site personnel regarding appropriateness of referral, and identification processes and procedures
- Monitor appropriate referrals
- Participate in providing staff training and intervention strategies within the classroom setting for those children with suspected disabilities around communication
- Participate in identifying students who may be in need of assessments to determine possible eligibility for special education and related services
Assessment
- The speech therapist facilitates the identification of students with communication handicaps by consulting with parents and teachers regarding behaviors that indicate suspected speech, language or hearing disorders; and by screening (ASQ), observation and standardized (norm referenced) and non-standardized (descriptive) assessments
Intervention
- Provide direct and indirect service delivery options involving one to one, small group or full class instructions within the classroom or community environment or speech/language treatment room
- Provide direct intervention in a variety of settings, including the general education classroom
- Maintain confidentiality of files and caseload record keeping
- Provide collaboration, strategies, and consultation with the classroom teacher to promote literacy
- Provide monthly trainings to the teacher and parents (i.e., adaptations/modifications of the core curriculum or classroom environment, developmentally appropriate and typical language for ages 0-5: expressive, receptive, articulation)
- Accountability
- Follow procedures established by supervisor in performing the role of a speech therapist including adhering to specific guidelines regarding the initial identification (pre-referral, ASQ assessment, record keeping) and re-evaluation.
- Develop measurable goals and objectives that are student- based, in accordance with core curriculum
Other Duties
- Be prompt and sign in/out at all schools
- Maintain and distribute caseload records monthly for compliance purposes as well as documentations
- Attend all meetings, workshops, and professional development activities as requested and authorized by supervisor
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned or requested by supervisor or program administrator
- Develop (annually) and review (quarterly) classroom goals and objectives in accordance with the core curriculum and Performance Standards
- Maintain data log as record keeping of student receiving services, time- lines, assessments, IEP and eligibility

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master’s Degree required; Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Therapist (CCC-SLP) preferred
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years clinical experience in providing speech and language treatment infusing behavioral principles and techniques with children 0-5 years.
- Demonstrates proficient knowledge of typical development.
- Experience working collaboratively with related professionals and providers
Requirements:
- Current Physical Health Screening (every 2 years thereafter)
- Fingerprinting Clearance (DOJ)
- Current Immunizations (TB, Influenza, MMR, Pertussis) (every 2 years thereafter)
- Clearance Child Abuse Index
- Current CPR & First Aid Certificate (every 2 years thereafter)
- Must be register with the Early Care & Education Workforce Registry
- Must attend trainings that are required by funders (might be an evening or Saturday)

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to sit approximately 40% of the time, walk 20% of the time and stand 40% of the time. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to type or handle, feel, and operate objects. The employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Must be able to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl and work with children on the floor for extended periods of time. The employee is frequently required to speak and listen. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
